I got this stray, and took him to the vet, he’s an older cat, though not sure how old… anyway, i cleaned his eyes and he seemed to be ok for a while – like a month – but now his one eye tears a lot, and there’s stuff there… i remove it, but… i wish there was some home remedy for it… the vet kinda killed me with the fees… this just started getting worse today… and he doesn’t go outside…
any ideas what i can do to help him?

He may have an upper respiratory infection, his nose would be running too if this was the case.
However, if it’s just the eyes, it would be one of two things–either the calci virus or the herpes virus.
If it’s the calci, you’ll need eye drops or ointment from the vet. This is a stubborn virus and won’t clear up easily on it’s own.
If it’s the herpes virus, you’re in luck. A bottle of cheap generic Lysine (or L-lysine, same thing) from the vitamin section in the grocery store would cost you about $4, just crush the pill and add it over the food. It doesn’t have a taste so cats eat it fine. 250 to 500mg is a daily dose. It binds to the herpes virus and neutralizes it. You’ll see clearer and cleaner eyes in about 3 days. We treat our FIV cat when he gets his watery eyes for about a week, and the stuff keeps it gone for months.
It also works great on humans with cold sores. MUCH better than Carmex! I think the bottle runs something like $4 for 60 pills if you get the generic. They’re large pills, I crush them with the back of a spoon. Don’t get the gel caps, those taste awful and no cat will eat that.
Sounds like a basic respiratory infection, which causes ”eye goop” to build up.
Sorry, but without treatment, you can’t expect it to just go away by wiping the eyes all the time.
We have a cat at our hospital that has the same problem. The vets says it is caused by a virus that reoccurs occasionally in cats.
As long as it is chronic tearing and the fluid is clear and it is not associated with any sneezing or coughing. If there is any sneezing or coughing, it needs to be treated by a vet for respiratory infection.
What has helped with our cat is to give Tobramycin drops for the tearing. We also give her a daily oral vitamin-type supplement called Lysine. This is supposed to help her not have as many outbreaks and suppress the virus.
give him lots of love =]
my cat eyes tears a lot too..i just wash them with water and some toilet paper everyday or when is needed….but was a time that he had a respiratory problem so if i were you i check this with your vet remenber cats never shows pain like there partners dogs….
