I am male and 63 years old and relitively healthy. I take lots of vitimuns to help me from becoming sicker when I get a cold of flu.

well, this is called Tinnitus which is a perception of sound in the ear in the absence of corresponding external sounds.
actually it is not itself a disease but a symptom resulting from a range of underlying causes, including ear infections, foreign objects or wax in the ear, and injury from loud noises. it is also a side-effect of some oral medications, such as aspirin, and may also result from an abnormally low level of serotonin activity.
I recommend you to see a doctor in order to determine the underlying cause and overcome it properly
