I have tinnitus, and many questions about it…?

I would like answers from doctors, but I don’t want to hear that it’s hopeless. There must be some way to stop or at least reduce that hideous ringing sound in my ears. I find it very hard to believe that in our modern times there is still no specific treatment for tinnitus and I am willing to try anything even if it’s not scientifically proven. So here’s my specific situation…

For a few weeks now I have had constant tinnitus which came out of nowhere, accompanied by "popping" sounds in my ears when I swallow or yawn, a weird feeling in the back of my throat I can’t really explain, and occasional mild headaches.

During this time I have only been able to get to sleep at around 5am, because that’s when the birds come out and tweet in the morning (Helping to distract me from the hideous ringing noises). Because of this I have been losing valuable hours of sleep, which doesn’t help me. So here are my questions…

Q1: Is it best to use tinnitus-masking CDs containing natural sounds, like rain and waves, or are plain old white noise CDs more effective?

Q2: What foods or dietary changes can I make to reduce tinnitus?

Q3: If my tinnitus is NOT noise-induced, can loud noise still make it worse?

Q4: If I’m listening to music, which audio formats are best to listen to through headphones, i.e. are low-bit rate MP3s bad for the ears? What sound format is safer?

Q5: Since my tinnitus hasn’t gotten any better in the last few weeks, is it likely that I will become a permenant sufferer?

Thank you for taking the time to read. I have had tinnitus my whole life to a certain degree, but never this bad. Any advice you could give would be delightful.

are my ringing ears permanently damaged?!?

So basically I went to a techno concert last Sunday and I guess I was next to really loud bass speakers the whole time for around 3 hours. On the way home I realized my ears have a weird ringing to it, kind of like a white noise. I thought it would go away but it’s still here and it’s been 4 days now. The volume of the white noise decreased but when a room is dead quiet I can still hear it. And I’m only 17 too, so this really sucks because it’s so hard to concentrate in classrooms with the annoying buzz/ring! Does this seem like tinnitus or what?

what can I do to calm down? I have 24/7 ringing in the ears because of an ear condition I have (there’s no treatment). it’s driving me nuts. I’m 21 and I’ve had it for 5 years. white noise/background noise doesn’t cover it anymore, it’s too loud.

I have trouble falling asleep and I don’t want to take sleeping pills, I don’t like them. any ideas?
oops wrong section. sorry

and I mean constantly, 24/7, forever. I have meniere’s syndrome which is a technically harmless but irritating syndrome with no known cause.

white noise doesn’t work for me, I can’t sleep lately, I can’t focus at school and I have had to drop out of university twice and along with other symptoms it’s ruining my life. I can’t think straight, I’m not getting things done, I just feel like i’m staring off into space all the time and I have to keep catching myself.. help ? what can I do? any psychological coping mechanisms?
anybody?? please help :(

hey.. I’ve had ringing in my right ear constantly for almost 5 years now (I’m 20)

I can’t fall asleep until I’m as tired as it’s possible to be, because it’s so LOUD. White noise won’t drown it out. The cause is Meniere’s Disease so there’s no real treatment. I haven’t had a normal sleep pattern for about 3 or 4 years.

How much will this impact my health if I don’t somehow overcome it soon? :s

Sleep Paralysis and Sleep?

Alright, so I sometimes have sleep paralysis experiences..
But they only really happen if I am extremely tired and just about to go to sleep. For some reason whenever I am about to have these, I hear a ringing noise (almost like white noise?) in my ear, then I almost always have a bad dream. Then I have the sleep paralysis experience following the dream. Can anyone tell me what’s going on?
Thanks.

I know the cause and have been to many doctors, I’m 20 and it’s been ringing for 5 years now (you’d think I would get used to it, but actually the opposite is happening). I’m having trouble putting up with it because white noise doesn’t work anymore (it just makes it louder). can you think of any other ways to make it a bit less irritating? I know it’s mind over matter for the most part but lately I’ve been having trouble with that. thanks

I concentrate much better with tunes playing in the background or via headphones; partially because my ears ring if there's not some type of 'white noise', and partially because it helps me fully ignore everyone around me rather than zoning out like I sometimes do. I've got ADHD, so having something to keep me focused usually helps – thus why I'm asking this question.

Also, I'd be using headphones while taking the test so as to not be rude to the other takers.

I've had Meniere's disease since I turned 14 and ever since my right ear has been ringing extremely loud + nonstop (I'm 20 now.) sometimes I can deal with it, and sometimes it goes for weeks at a time as very quiet. but lately it is blasting at full volume and I can't concentrate at all, I'm even losing sense of time, and listening to music or white noise just makes it louder.

I've noticed that it affects my mood, sometimes I will feel incredibly frustrated and depressed and wonder why, then realize it's because I'm bracing against it. I can't concentrate at all, can barely even think straight. it's hard to sleep is there anything I can do? I've been told that you can't treat tinnitus but seriously, any idea would be good. thanks

DID YOU HEAR THAT?

The lunacy, the flippin’ frikken madness…
the Mumbo, says Lindsay, Jumbo!
I put my ear up to the receiver, (opposite
the sender)
and try again to hear
the coherence
inside the hiss…

And that ring! Is it part
of the white noise?
Then the throbbing begins,
begins again
and I sob…I want so much to start,
and stop.
I cannot go back to then, before
when
touched by a voice.

I know what I know.
I know what I heard.
I just know it.

I'm looking for something that makes a white noise that is not expensive to put in my toddler's bedroom. A fan will not work because his fingers are small and so far can fit into any fan we've looked at. I need something safe that will make a masking white noise for him at night. Any ideas?

Noisy neighbors vs. Defective architecture?

Awakened again at 4AM by aurally obese neighbors. Brand new building, due to architectural elements (windows lined up between units) has a lack of noise insulation in key locations. I hear the following from bed: conversation, dishes clanking, in sink disposal, cabinets closing, sneezing, coughing, phone ringing, wall rattling footsteps, doors closing. Brought this to the attention of warranty department, no help. I added white noise / ear plugs, and have answered the neighbor's coughs with my own (no help). Cannot sell, been less than a year. Help! Do I call the front desk with complaints for every noise? Do I move my bed into the dining room? Do I rent the place in hopes the tenant won't mind? Do I explain to my neighbors how they should use their condo. and when? Do I leave a loud talk radio station on in hopes they'll figure it out? Not ok I should get a half night's sleep because they have surprisingly massive aural footprints and building has poor design.

ringing in my ears?

you know when you get a ringing in your ears some times and it passes. well i have a ringing in my ears all the time i first noticed it about a year ago. i when i sleep i needed white noise from a fan to drown it out. now that i have my job i have to wear ear plugs and i hear the ringing when ever i have them in and when it is quite enough and i am alone with my thoughts i can hear the ringing.
What should i do? should i vistit the doctor.
