As an adult, I have had strep ear, and years later had to have tubes put in my ears about 5 different times as the ears were clogged for months after a cold or flu. The eardrums blew out once when I sneezed and later during an earache. Now neither of mine will grow back. There is a surgery, at $15,000 per ear, but my Otolaryngologist says with my history, there is no guarantee that they won't break again. Mine were very thin.

I hope yours grows back nice and thick.

As for hearing loss, I have a 28% hearing loss in each ear (considered mild). In North Carolina, where I live, you have to have at least a 33% loss before the audiologist can recommend a hearing aid. I get by pretty well, though.

Be sure to baby that eardrum after it heals--no loud concerts, and try to avoid the screamers and air horns at sports events. Carry an ear plug with you just in case. Good luck!!

It will eventually heal, but I think it grows back slightly thicker than it was originally, so your hearing will be slightly worse. You may not even notice it.

The two things are not related. Some perforated eardrums do heal. Mine did.

The ringing in the ear, called tinnitus, is caused by brain damage. I have it as a result of an accident which happened half a century after the busted eardrum. It drives me crazy at times. I am learning to live with it.
